Israel’s prime minister on Monday played down Egypt’s termination of a gas supply deal after the Israelifinance minister said the move cast a shadow over the peace agreement between the two countries.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the cancellation of the contract supplying Israel with 40 percent of its gas needs, announced on Sunday, resulted from a business rather than a diplomatic dispute.

Egyptian officials also said it was a trade issue, although there have been growing public calls for Egypt to review ties with Israel since the overthrow of Hosni Mubarak, for whom a peace treaty with Israel was a cornerstone of regional policy.

Minister of International Cooperation Faiza Abu el-Naga said the Israeli side was welcome to negotiate a new contract.

Questions over Cairo’s attitude to Israel after the dramatic political changes in Egypt appeared anew in the Israeli media, with one headline, in the popular Yedioth Ahronoth daily, reading: “They don’t want us”.

Egyptian politicians welcomed the move to end a deal heavily criticised even under Mubarak. Opposition media and the public accused his government of giving Israel preferential pricing and using the deal to benefit his allies.

Israeli officials say gas has not flowed from Egypt to Israel for most of this year due to a series of attacks on the pipeline running through Egypt’s volatile Sinai peninsula.

Israel’s government has approved a rise in electricity prices despite the pressures of mounting public protests against high living costs.

The state-owned electricity company did not immediately publish any price changes on Monday, though the Treasury, which approved an increase on Sunday, said the rate hike would likely be between 9 percent and 10 percent.

In a statement, the Finance Ministry said it had minimised the rise by lowering taxes by 69 percent on diesel fuel, which is used in power plants, after the state-owned electricity provider signalled it had to raise its rates after months of disruptions in natural gas supply from Egypt.

Without the tax rate reduction, the increase in electricity tariffs would have been about 20 percent.

But any rise in households’ electricity bills seemed likely to encourage nationwide protests demanding reductions in the cost of housing, utilities and consumer goods.

Led by sharply rising prices of housing, fuel and food, Israeli inflation reached an annual rate of 4.2 percent in June — well above a government target of 1 to 3 percent. That has led to a series of 10 interest rate increases since August 2009. Inflation is projected to ease to a rate of 2.9 percent by the third quarter of 2012.

A quarter of a million people marched in Tel Aviv, Israel’s commercial capital, on Saturday, under the banner of “social justice” in an escalating campaign by the country’s middle class for price cuts.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s cabinet responded to the biggest economy-related demonstration in Israel’s history by naming a public committee on Sunday to open a dialogue with protest leaders.

JERUSALEM (AP) — Israeli leaders are praising former Cuban President Fidel Castro for supporting Israel in a series of interviews

Israeli President Shimon Peres’ office says Peres sent Castro a personal letter Saturday thanking him for his remarks. And Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu sent reporters text messages drawing attention to a series of interviews published in the Atlantic magazine early this month.

The Israeli praise is highly unusual, as Castro has traditionally supported the Palestinians and has been highly critical of the Jewish state in the past.

In the interview, Castro chided Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad for denying the Holocaust, in which some six million Jews were killed by the Nazi’s during World War II. More information on foxnews.

JERUSALEM, Jan 14 (Reuters) – A bomb exploded near a car carrying three Israeli diplomats in Jordan on Thursday but none was hurt, Israeli broadcasters said.

The blast occurred at around 5 p.m. (1500 GMT) close to the Allenby Bridge crossing over the Jordan river between Jordan and the Israeli-occupied West Bank, Israel’s Army Radio said.

Asked about the report, a spokesman for Israel’s Foreign Ministry said: “We are checking and not commenting for now.”

Israel’s Channel Two television said the car had been en route from the Israeli embassy in Amman but that the ambassador, Danny Nevo, was not aboard.
